Going into last night’s game against the Detroit Fighting Irish, Jared Fisher of the Fort Wayne Spacemen was two goals away from tying the USPHL’s record for goals scored in a single season.
He got four, three of them coming in the second period, as Fort Wayne overwhelmed Detroit 13-1 at the SportOne Parkview Ice House. The Spacemen bench emptied after Fisher, now with 49 goals and 44 assists on the season, set the new record on a night where Fort Wayne’s offense was on show for all to see.
Logan Robins got things started for Fort Wayne at 5:42 into the first period with a power-play goal, off a pass from Caden Shwetz. Three-and-a-half minutes later, Keven Lapointe scored on Detroit goalie Justin Sheets unassisted to make it 2-0. Detroit’s Brendan Higgins scored his 26th goal of the season a mere 24 seconds later to bring the score to 2-1, but that would be the only offensive threat the Irish would pose for the rest of the game.
Fort Wayne also saw goals from Immy Johnson, Carson Salkeld (his first of the season), Caden Shwetz, and Alvon Barard. The full scoresheet can be seen here.
Sheets was replaced in net halfway through the second period by Derek Antol, who gave up 7 goals on 28 shots, before Sheets was placed back in net during the third period. In all, Sheets stopped 46 out of 52 shots.
Spacemen goalie Isaac Gleissner stopped 25 of 26 shots.
The Spacemen are back in action today at 12:45pm against Detroit. They’re currently fourth place in the Midwest East division, with five games remaining in the regular season.
